As far as binge drinking is concerned, Wisconsin ranks right near the top. They also rank high in the past-month use of alcohol, due in part to the state’s low perception of the risks of alcohol abuse. Admissions to Wisconsin’s alcohol and drug treatment programs are above the national average, and Wisconsin is one of the few states that isn’t reporting a drop in alcohol-only admissions.

According to the DEA, there are many other drug threats in Wisconsin. People in the eastern and central parts of the state are using both crack and powder cocaine, and those in the west are dealing with the all-too-familiar scourge of methamphetamine. Marijuana is widely available everywhere, and the misuse of prescription medications like Oxycontin, Vicodin, and Xanax is of particular concern in the state. These drugs are prized for the instant rush they deliver when they are crushed and snorted or injected.

Wisconsin’s drug and alcohol rehab centers’ admission rates reflect this new trend. The rate of admission for opiate addiction is higher even than that of marijuana addiction, and almost half of the rate for alcohol abuse. Drug abuse isn’t just a city problem, and it also cuts across age, gender, and socioeconomic boundaries. Older people are at risk for the accidental misuse of these medicines, and teens are taking them to fit in. A drug problem could be as close as your bathroom’s medicine cabinet.

As of 2006, the last data year, there were 290 drug and alcohol treatment centers in the state of Wisconsin. Of all those, two hundred thirty six were private for- or non-profit entities. Thirteen were tribally owned, and the rest were state run. Over sixty percent of Wisconsin’s rehab centers receive public funding, and 196 of them are contracted with doctors and hospitals. This means that the services of Wisconsin’s drug and alcohol treatment centers are available to all of its citizens.

As is the case in many states, Wisconsin provides most of its drug and alcohol treatment on an outpatient basis, and there are also sixty seven residential treatment facilities ready to assist those with the severest addictions. There are only fifteen programs in the state, and fifty nine programs are allowed to distribute buprenorphine. Those looking for such treatment may even have to go out of state or find an alternate treatment program.
