Louisiana’s drug and alcohol rehab centers see more admissions for cocaine use. Admissions for cocaine addiction outnumber those for only alcohol by a ratio of nearly two to one, and all drug-only admissions make up forty-four percent of the total. This speaks volumes about the wide availability of illegal drugs in the state of Louisiana. The state’s drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers are trying to keep up with the overwhelming demand, as drug admissions have gone up 200% since 1992.

Cocaine isn’t the only drug that’s a problem in Louisiana. Prescription drugs, meth, and marijuana, as well as “club drugs” like PCP, ecstasy and LSD are a concern for the state. In 2006, the most recent data year, over twenty-two thousand people were admitted to drug and alcohol treatment centers in Louisiana, and almost six percent of those people were under the age of eighteen. Teens in Louisiana usually end up doing drugs in order to fit in or to cope with pressure at home and school. According to a state report on health problems for adults, the 18-24 age group leads in binge drinking. This means that parents of young teens need to be especially observant- because the earlier a person starts drinking and doing drugs, the more likely they are to become addicted at some point.

For the person seeking drug or alcohol treatment in Louisiana, there are 145 treatment facilities to choose from. Most are privately run, and two are operated by tribal entities. The remainder of the facilities are owned and operated by various state and local agencies. Private doesn’t mean unavailable, though- over sixty percent of Lousiana’s drug and alcohol rehab centers get some public funding, and many have contracts with hospitals to provide emergency treatment services.

Not all programs are offered in all facilities, and each facility may differ in the way it approaches treatment. Those that need residential treatment for a severe addiction can take heart, because there are almost fifty of these centers in Louisiana. They aim to help the addict recover by removing all temptation from their reach. Most of Louisiana’s drug treatment centers offer outpatient services as well, but there are only ten centers that offer opiate addiction treatment programs and fourteen doctors allowed to dispense buprenorphine.
