People in Idaho are a lot more likely to be admitted to a rehab center for alcoholism than they are for drug abuse, although Idaho does have a problem with both methamphetamine and marijuana use. Its thousands of acres of forest land and its proximity to Canada means that there’s plenty of marijuana available statewide. Like a lot of other states, Idaho has seen a sharp rise in the amount of methamphetamine use. According to Idaho’s drug and alcohol treatment centers, they’ve seen admissions for meth use go from under 10% in 1992, to over half of all admissions in 2005. Notwithstanding that high number, alcohol is still the drug of choice among the citizens of Idaho.
Idaho has seen a number of alcohol-related deaths well above the national average, and the number goes up every year. Alcohol is especially a problem for Idaho’s youth. Idaho’s students are a lot more likely to drive drunk than other teens in the US, and about ten percent of all people admitted to Idaho’s drug rehab centers were under the age of eighteen.
Other than alcohol, the other major drug threat in the state of Idaho is marijuana. It affects both the user and the people who end up hurt after someone drives under the influence or commits a crime to finance their habit. Of all Idaho’s drug-related arrests, sixty percent are for marijuana offenses. Marijuana addiction is the second biggest reason for admission to an Idaho drug rehab center. Most people from Idaho don’t think there is a great risk from the use of marijuana, which is contributing to the rise in the number of addicts seeking help.
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Issues At-A-Glance, Idaho
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), December 2008
For 2007, the last year for which we have data, there were fifty seven drug and alcohol treatment facilities in Idaho. Four are owned by various tribal governments, twenty one were private and not-for-profit, 28 were private/for profit, and a few were publicly run. This means that Idaho’s citizens have a lot of choices when it comes to seeking drug and alcohol treatment, but they should be selective because not all programs are the same. While at least seventy percent of Idaho’s drug rehabs are at least partly funded by the public, not all offer some services. Only three programs and eighteen doctors were certified in the administration of buprenorphine, a drug that’s used to treat opiate addictions in much the same way as methadone. Those that need this type of treatment may have to expand the distance they are willing to go for help.
Also, most of Idaho’s rehabilitation centers are outpatient facilities. Many addicts seeking drug treatment in Idaho get help from a few sources- first from a detox, then they’ll go to a counselor and behavioral therapy somewhere else. Those that need a more intense program can go to one of thirteen residential drug treatment programs in Idaho. Your doctor will be able to determine what kind of program is best for you.
